Where Lava Meets the Ocean

Hvaleyrarvöllur, operated by Golfklúbburinn Keilir in Hafnarfjörður, offers two contrasting styles of golf. The front nine, known as Hraunið, winds through rugged lava fields, where accuracy is essential to keeping the ball in play.

The back nine, Hvaleyrin, takes on a links-style character, with coastal fairways, deep bunkers and sweeping sea views. Extensively redesigned by Mackenzie & Ebert, the updated back nine opened in its final form in 2024.

Playing the Course

What to Expect

A round of two distinct halves: precision golf through lava fields on the front nine, followed by links-style holes where coastal winds, deep bunkers and the sea add to the challenge.

Signature Holes

Holes 16 and 17 are among the course’s coastal highlights. The long par-5 16th leads into a dramatic par-3 17th, where the sea lies just beyond the left side of the green and wind can make club selection particularly challenging.

Facilities

Clubhouse with restaurant and pro shop, plus the nearby Hraunkot practice facility featuring a TrackMan driving range and indoor golf simulators. Golf carts, trolleys and rental club sets are available.
